Installing UAIE (sideload for pilot schools)

School IT administrators can deploy UAIE to a Microsoft 365 tenant through Integrated Apps in the Microsoft 365 admin centre. Individual users of Word desktop or Word for the web can sideload the manifest.

Word for Windows

  1. Open Word.
  2. Go to Insert → Add-ins → My Add-ins.
  3. Choose Upload My Add-in.
  4. Browse to the manifest.xml file supplied with your UAIE package and choose Upload.
  5. The UAIE button appears on the Home tab.

Word for Mac

  1. In Finder, open ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Documents/wef/.
  2. Copy the supplied manifest.xml into that folder (create the wef folder if it does not exist).
  3. Restart Word. The UAIE button appears on the Home tab.

Word for the web

  1. Open any document in Word for the web.
  2. Choose Home → Add-ins → More Add-ins.
  3. Choose Upload My Add-in and upload the manifest.xml file.

UAIE needs Word 2016 or later, Word for Mac 2016 or later, or Word for the web (Word API 1.3). In older versions the task pane shows a message asking you to update Office.

Using UAIE

UAIE has fourteen features, plus an optional Settings panel. Nothing activates until you open the panel and press a button.

1. Reading Companion (text-to-speech)

Select text, expand Reading Companion, choose a voice, and press Start. Each word is highlighted as it is read. Voices come from your browser or operating system; some are online voices (see the privacy question below).

2. Grade 2 UEB Braille

Select text and press Convert Selection (or Entire Document). UAIE writes Unified English Braille, Grade 2, using the common contractions it can apply reliably by rule, and saves a .brf file (North American Braille ASCII, 40 cells per line, 25 lines per page) for braille displays and embossers. In Word desktop, where downloads are blocked, the .brf text is shown for you to copy. Braille produced automatically should be checked by a qualified transcriber before formal use.

3. Plain Language (six Bloom’s levels)

Select text and press a level. L1 and L2 run on your device. L3 to L6 send the first 3,000 characters of the selection to Anthropic with your own API key. Then choose Insert below, Replace, or Copy. If the selection contains tables or images, Replace asks before overwriting them.

4. Translate

Choose a language (34 are available), then Translate Selection Only or Translate Whole Document (up to 60,000 characters). The translation is inserted as one marked block; Remove Translation Blocks deletes every such block. Needs your Anthropic API key.

5. Dyslexia Reading Font

Select text and press Apply to Selection: Verdana 14 pt, 1.5 line spacing, and a cream highlight. Ctrl+Z undoes it straight away; Revert Selection restores the original formatting later.

6. UAIE Sign™

Type a word and press Show. Words in the 72-gesture core set show the UAIE Sign gesture; other words are fingerspelled. UAIE Sign is an original learning aid, not BSL, ASL, or ISL.

7. Accessibility Audit

Press Run Audit for a score out of 100 and a list of findings (missing alt text, heading order, empty headings, tables without header rows, unclear hyperlink text, and readability notes), each linked to the WCAG 2.2 criterion it relates to. Export Report saves a .txt summary. The audit is a guide, not a certification.

8. Cognitive Load Indicator

Press Analyse Selection or Entire Document for the Flesch Reading Ease score, sentence length, and complex-word percentage. Adjust the complex-word threshold with the slider. Documents with two or more Heading 1 sections also get a per-section chart. Press Refresh after editing.

9. Multiple Intelligences

Choose a level and one of Gardner’s nine intelligences. L1 and L2 are free and run on your device for all nine; L3 to L6 send the selection to Anthropic with your own API key.

10. Syllable Break View

Select text and press Split Syllables to see mid-dots between syllables, then Insert, Replace, or Copy. It is a reading aid based on a simple rule, not a dictionary hyphenator.

11. Visual Profiles

High Contrast, Focus, Spacing+, and Large Text change the selected paragraphs. Revert to Default restores their original formatting.

12. Colour-Blindness Preview

Pick a colour (or Harvest Document to collect the text colours used) to see how it looks with protanopia, deuteranopia, and tritanopia (Machado et al., 2009 model).

13. Reading Ruler

Load a selection and step through it line by line with ▲ / ▼ or the arrow keys.

14. Focus Sounds

A 14 Hz binaural tone (use headphones) and pink, brown, and white noise, generated on your device. Some people find background sound helps them concentrate; it is not a medical treatment.

Interface language

The list at the top of the task pane switches the interface between 31 languages, with right-to-left layout for Arabic and Urdu. A coloured dot shows how well each translation has been checked.

Frequently asked questions

Does UAIE send my document anywhere?

Only when you use these features:

In addition, Microsoft’s office.js library is downloaded from Microsoft when the pane opens, as for every Office add-in. Everything else runs on your device. UAIE has no server and no telemetry. A one-time notice appears before the first AI request. See the Privacy Policy.

Where is my API key kept?

In your browser’s local storage on this device only. It does not roam to your other devices and is never sent to UAIE (there is no UAIE server); it is sent only to Anthropic with your requests. Use Clear in Settings on shared computers.

Do I need an API key?

Only for Translate, Plain Language L3–L6, and Multiple Intelligences L3–L6. Everything else works without one.

Why does Export Report or Braille show text instead of downloading a file?

Word desktop does not let add-ins download files. UAIE shows the text in a box with a Copy button; paste it into a new plain-text file (use the .brf extension for braille).

How do I uninstall UAIE?

Insert → Add-ins → My Add-ins → UAIE → Remove. Uninstalling does not change your documents.

31: English, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Kannada, Sanskrit, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese, Swahili, Japanese, German, Arabic, Urdu, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Greek, Romanian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Amharic, Zulu, and Afrikaans. Can I use UAIE offline?

Once the pane has loaded, yes for every feature except Translate, Plain Language L3–L6, Multiple Intelligences L3–L6, and online read-aloud voices, which need the internet.
