Installing UAIE (sideload for pilot schools)

School IT administrators can deploy UAIE to a Microsoft 365 tenant through the central admin deployment. For individual users on a Word desktop or Word for the Web, the manifest can be sideloaded.

Word for Windows Desktop

  1. Open Word.
  2. Go to Insert tab → Add-ins → My Add-ins.
  3. Click Upload My Add-in.
  4. Browse to the manifest.xml file supplied with your UAIE package and click Upload.
  5. The UAIE button appears in the Home tab.

Word for Mac

  1. In Finder, open ~/Library/Containers/Microsoft Word/Data/Documents/wef/.
  2. Copy the supplied manifest.xml into that folder. Create the wef folder if it does not exist.
  3. Restart Word. The UAIE button will appear in the Home tab.

Word for the Web

  1. Open any document in Word for the Web.
  2. Click Home → Add-ins → More Add-ins.
  3. Click Upload My Add-in and upload the manifest.xml file.

Using UAIE

UAIE has seven features. Nothing activates until you open the panel and press a button.

Reading Companion (Text-to-speech)

Select text in the document, open UAIE, expand Reading Companion, pick a voice, and press Start. Each word highlights as it is read.

Grade 2 UEB Braille

Select text and press Convert Selection (or use Entire Document). UAIE produces Grade 2 UEB Braille and downloads a standards-compliant .brf file for refreshable Braille displays and embossers.

Plain Language (six Bloom's levels)

Select text, expand Plain Language, press any level from L1 to L6. L1 and L2 are local and free. L3 to L6 use your own Anthropic API key (entered in Settings). When satisfied, choose Insert Below, Replace, or Copy.

Dyslexia Reading Font

Select text, press Apply to Selection. UAIE applies Verdana 14pt with 1.5x line spacing and a cream highlight. Ctrl+Z fully reverses it.

UAIE Sign™

Type a word in the lookup box and press Show. Core-set words display the UAIE Sign gesture; other words are fingerspelled letter by letter.

Accessibility Audit

Press Run Audit. UAIE scans the entire document and returns a score out of 100 with a detailed finding list: missing alt text, broken heading order, ambiguous links, run-on sentences, and more. Export Report writes a .txt summary suitable for a staff meeting.

Language

The dropdown at the top of the task pane switches the UI between seventeen languages, including full RTL support for Arabic and Urdu.

Frequently asked questions

Does UAIE send my document anywhere?

No. Reading Companion, Braille, Dyslexia Font, UAIE Sign, Audit, and Plain Language L1-L2 all run entirely on your machine. Only Plain Language L3-L6, if you activate them with your own API key, send the selected text directly to Anthropic's API. See the Privacy Policy.

Do I need an API key?

Only for Plain Language L3 to L6. All other features, including L1 and L2, work without any API key.

How do I uninstall UAIE?

Insert tab → Add-ins → My Add-ins → right-click UAIE → Remove. Uninstallation leaves your documents completely untouched.

What languages are supported for the UI?

English, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Kannada, Sanskrit, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese, Swahili, Japanese, German, Arabic, Urdu.

Can I use UAIE offline?

Yes for all features except Plain Language L3-L6, which need internet access to reach Anthropic's API.
